Since 1993 archaeology has been taught at Mid Sweden University, at first in the town of Östersund, Jämtland, and since 2003 in the town of Härnösand, Ångermanland. Today there is no course program in archaeology, but archaeology remains part of the research at a multi-disciplinary department, in which teaching and research is carried out in a number of humanistic disciplines, including history.
The research program of archaeology at Mid Sweden University specialises in the historical archaeology of Mid Sweden, including Saami archaeology. The annual field-school in 1997-2001 excavated a medieval deserted farm, Eisåsen, Berg p., Jämtland. In 2002-2006 a summer farm (Sw. fäbod), Munkbovallen, Oviken p., Jämtland, was excavated.
The research program also includes the recording and excavation of three Forest Finn landscapes and farms at Råsjö, Borgsjö p. in Medelpad, Grannäs, Alfta p. in Hälsingland and Svartviken, Stora Skedvi p. in Dalarna. The field and laboratory stage of this subprogram was concluded in 2008.
In 2007 the excavation of a charcoal burner’s hut in Årskogen, Gnarp p., Hälsingland was conducted in collaboration with the museum at Norra Berget, Sundsvall.
