2010-03-08 :
A new leadership tool has been developed at Mid Sweden University. The tool provides statistically valid warnings about the health of employees. It is therefore expected to be an important support for managers in their leadership.
Innovative implants benefit both patients and caregivers
2009-12-14 :
Researchers at Mid Sweden University, together with Professor Jan Hirsch and Consultant Per Dérand, oral & maxillofacial surgeons at Uppsala University Hospital and Mälarsjukhuset Hospital, respectively, have developed an entirely new method for individually adapted implants. The method provides better patient safety and lower costs. It involves planning, design, and production. At the end of...
Major school project builds bridges between nations
2009-07-02 :
A group of students at Berg Upper-Secondary School in Sweden has had an opportunity during the spring to talk about their lives in the province of Jämtland with others in Europe and to think more as Europeans. They have taken part in a developmental project together with students in six other European countries designed to strengthen the common European perspective.
How white is a paper?
2009-10-22 :
Whiter paper and better color reproduction are examples of important competitive advantages on an international market. But how white is a paper? And why do vacation photos turn out so dark if you don’t buy expensive photo paper? Per Edström at Mid Sweden University has attracted international attention for his research, which has resulted in a new generation of computational tools for simulation...

Swine flu having powerful impact on us
2009-05-06 :
The new influenza A (H1N1), known as the swine flu, demonstrates the power of people's perceptions of risk. Sales of face masks are breaking all records not only in Mexico but also in Sweden. Hotel guests are being isolated at a hotel in Hong Kong, and people with the sniffles are being isolated in airports around the world. But before the outbreak of the flu, this was a risk that extremely few...
Smart solutions reduce CO2 emissions
2008-10-14 :
Better house envelopes, more efficient energy supply systems, and use of biofuels for heating buildings would reduce CO2 emissions in Europe. Buildings account for 36% of Sweden’s energy consumption , and many homes are still heated with electricity. Existing houses therefore have a key role to play in reducing the use of electricity in Sweden.
Replacing the coach doesn’t solve problems
2008-09-17 :
Bringing in a new coach rarely solves problems, regardless of when it is done. This is the conclusion of a study from Mid Sweden University about hiring and firing coaches in the Swedish Elite Series ice-hockey league during the period 1975/76-2005/06. Despite this fact, coaches are nevertheless very publicly fired. The study shows that it is a mistake to replace the coach.
Forest fuel reduces climate changes
2008-06-03 :
Growing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere primarily from CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels are impacting the climate on earth. Replacing fossil fuels with forest fuels is becoming more and more urgent. That would reduce the net emissions of CO2 and the effects on the climate. This is shown in a dissertation from Mid Sweden University.
Relaxation exercises sharpens shooting in biathlon
2008-05-29 :
Biathletes who have learned to apply a relaxation technique can improve their results in the rifle-shooting range. This is shown in a study carried out at the Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre at Mid Sweden University.
Advanced materials optimization increases the lifetime for fiber lasers
2008-05-20 :
Researchers have found new methods for optimizing glass in order to increase the lifetime of fiber lasers. The trend is to produce fiber lasers with higher output powers, which places great demands on the optical fiber. This has been shown at Mid Sweden University in Sweden.
New technology for determining position with great precision
2008-05-12 :
A new technique for measuring light has been developed by Mid Sweden University in Sweden. The technique consists of a new type of position-sensitive detectors and of extremely small, compact, and cost-efficient spectrometers.
Swedish space gym being tested by astronauts
2008-05-12 :
The crew of the International Space Station (ISS) is presently testing a Swedish space gym. The gym was developed by Per Tesch, a professor at Mid Sweden University. The aim is to counteract muscle atrophy and osteoporosis in astronauts.
Syringe exchange programs have social dimension
2008-01-28 :
A new and comprehensive study shows that syringe exchange programs contribute to testing and vaccinations and that programs also seem to play an important social role for a small portion of participants. On the other hand, no unequivocal support was found for the assumption that syringe exchange programs help reduce HIV and hepatitis infections among injecting abusers. Nor does low coverage of...
Digital paper that talks to you
2007-09-21 :
The large boards and store displays already exist as prototypes. They talk to you directly, using digital information embedded in the paper. You simply touch various parts of the display to get information to stream out of printed speakers. And this coming technology can be used in many areas, from advertising to tourist information at attractions.
DecideIT helps you make tough decisions
2007-09-21 :
Today’s decision-making in organizations is often characterized by intuition and gut feeling, even though human intuition is seldom sufficient in complex decision-making situations.
New simulation tool enhances competitiveness of paper industry
2007-09-21 :
Researchers at Mid Sweden University have developed the next generation of simulation tools for optical properties in paper and print. This provides paper producers with greater accuracy and increased understanding while also facilitating communication between the paper and the graphics industries for properties like whiteness and color.
Mid Sweden University leads development of digital color x-rays
2007-09-21 :
In the future doctors will be able to find more tumors at an early stage while using a smaller x-ray dose for each examination. Color x-rays offer new possibilities for medical diagnoses. This spring Mid Sweden University is presenting three dissertations in the field of digital color x-rays.
Self-assembling nanostructures of DNA — a biotechnologist's dream
2007-09-21 :
Wouldn't it be great if we could get computer chips to grow on trees? Or at least use the specific bonds of DNA molecules to get nanostructures to grow themselves right in the test tube? This technology could be used to build everything from tiny electronics components to machines that sequence DNA. This is shown in a dissertation from Mid Sweden University.
A smart video camera understands what it sees
2007-09-21 :
Imagine a smart video camera that automatically makes a note of license plate numbers on cars. It’s more than a camera. It can also analyze the content of images. How can video cameras best be taught to understand and react to what they see? How is the memory used in such a camera?
New technology uses radio to keep stock in order
2007-09-21 :
Research financiers Vinnova in Sweden and Tekes in Finland have granted SEK 6 million to a Nordic research project in printed electronics and RFID, Radio Frequency Identification. Eventually RFID will replace bar codes on packaging, for example. With the help of radio technology, many items can then be identified at the same time, which is of great value in taking inventory, for instance. The...

Environmental damage in the Baltic can have major economic consequences
2007-09-20 :
Environmental damage in the Baltic can have negative effects on the important species bladderwrack (kelp) and thereby on the entire ecosystem. This in turn would have a severe economic impact on fishing. This is shown in a study presented by Mid Sweden University in Sweden.
Shocking news from researcher ski wax slows your glide
2007-09-20 :
Leonid Kuzmin, a doctoral candidate at Mid Sweden University, has found that recreational cross-country skiers should forget about waxing their skis to improve their glide. In many cases even ski racers would also do better if they competed on unwaxed skis.
