Student unions – are run by you and for you

On every campus within Mid Sweden University, there is a student union that looks after your interests as concerns your education and questions related to the social aspects of student life. The student union endeavours to see to it that you get as good an education as possible, and that your days of study are as good as they can be.

The membership

The membership in the student union is mandatory according to Swedish law, and you pay a term fee to the student union that is active on the campus where you take the main part of your credits. This means that you do not have to pay more than one term fee as a student at Mid Sweden University, even if you study at several of Mid Sweden University different campuses. However, if you simultaneously study at some other university, you must as a general rule pay the term fee there too.

The obligatory membership guarantees that there is an organisation that looks after student interests. The student union is an organisation of students for students. It is therefore not an organisational part of the university.

Looks after student interests

An important part of the student union work is to see to it that the student influence functions efficiently. In all preparatory and deciding boards and counsils at Mid Sweden University, there are chairs for student representatives, who look after student interests. The student union is also engaged in dialogues with the municipalities and the local commercial and industrial life, in order to see to it that the students’ life situation is further improved.

Take an active part in the student union – and get new experiences as well as new friends

The student union is based on an active interest among the members. You can take an active part within anyone of the different areas of student life. For example, the student union building and its activities, as well as the student magazine, are run by non-profit-making students. There are also programme associations for most of the study programmes at Mid Sweden University. The programme associations are different but most of them look after how the programmes work, keep up the contact with the local commercial and industrial life and have some form of social activities. In addition to these organisations, there are also other more independent associations as for example student choirs, students’ farce groups, international committees etc.

Through your engagement in the student union, you get the opportunity to broaden your competence and at the same time meet new people. You develop personally and learn to trust your own ability if you take on a commission of trust in which you represent your fellow students. It may also be an additional qualification for you in a future working life. Even if you do not want to engage actively, it is important that you draw the student union’s attention to problems that you may encounter during your days of study, and that you make your voice heard by voting in the student union elections.

The International Student Committee
The International Student Committee is the branch of the student union that focuses on the well being of the international students at Mid Sweden University. The members of the Committee are both Swedish students and international students. For instance, the Committee organizes welcome events at the beginning of the semester. During the semester they organize different parties and trips. As a tradition, the International Student Committee also provides all exchange students at Mid Sweden University with a supporting fellow student. The role of the fellow student varies, but he or she usually meets the exchange students on the arrival day and helps the student get settled in.

Do you want to get in contact with the International Student Committee please send an e-mail to the committee at your campus.
