Archives and information science is defined as the systematic study of the origin, organisation, use and preservation of records.
In the academic year of 1988/1989 the first undergraduate course was launched at the College of Sundsvall/Härnösand, later Mid Sweden University.Today you could study Archives and information science both at undergraduate level and at Master level, primarily as single subject distance courses on part-time. About 250 students each year are studying Archives and information science at Mid Sweden University at different levels.
Since 2003 several research projects have started at the Mid Sweden University. The focus is recordkeeping in current administrations, and the recordkeeping processes are considered as vital parts of organisations business processes.
