Magnus Israelsson antogs som doktorand hösten 2005 och skriver sin avhandling inom ramen för följande område:
The positioning of compulsory care within the legal system The dissertation has a comparative approach which imply analysis in the variation in legislations i.e. criteria, length, type of legislation, ethical rationale etc and how these variations are related to a number of factors on country level, such as legislative (colonial etc) history, culture, economics, health and welfare system, demographics, substance use problem epidemiology etc. Furthermore how changes in legislations occur over time and how these may be related to other developments in these countries. The application of compulsory care is also in focus i.e. estimations of how many misusers that are treated under these legislations, and how the treatment systems are organised etc.
