Spinn-off Companies produced within STC

STC has produced six spinn-off companies since the beginning in 2005. Four new spinn-offs companies are still embryonic companies which are in the pre-business incubator at Mid Sweden University. Here your will find a short presentation of each company.

Established spin-off companies

InterakTiV – Sensible Things that Communicate in collaboration with ITV Arena, Gävle. Interactive TV Arena with IHT in Bollnäs developed a model for the development of media, which is based on user-centered interaction design. The results will be used in IHTs research in the field. The project has developed support for context-based seamless distribution of multimedia services and context-based control content, based on a system for sharing of sensor and user information through the user's devices exploited by Ericsson in a Connect Home invest.

Raybium - Raybium is a spin-off company with the core business of developing high performance optical fibres for fibre lasers. Fibre lasers are widely used in several industrial applications such as cutting, welding and marking of steel, foil and plastics. Raybium is a supplier of rare-earth (RE) doped fibers for fiber laser applications. The core competence is development of high performance RE-doped silica fibers for e.g. OEM integration. Raybium offers a new type of ytterbium doped silica fibers meeting high demands on efficiency and reliability (high photodarkening resistance). The fibers are available in several standard dimensions including both PM- and non-PM versions. Raybium also provide other RE-doped fibers on request (erbium, thulium).

SEPS Technologies - SEPS Technologies AB was formally established in May 2009 and a leader in high-frequency transformers for power conversion applications. SEPS transformers have a unique design enabling efficient switching mode power supplies (SMPS) in the 1-10MHz range. The transformers is used in high frequency AC/DC or isolated DC/DC applications where very compact SMPS designs is requested as inductors and capacitors can be selected very small but also in situations where the load must be controlled very rapidly.

Sensible Solutions Sweden AB - Sensible Solutions has its origin from a research projects that aimed towards Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) with a focus upon combining electronics and paper products. Deep investigations were performed upon development and characterization of high frequency RFID antennas printed on paper with electrically conductive ink. Taking the technology of printed electronics one step further the concept Action Activated Tags (AAT) was developed. AAT was a unique concept that introduced RFID tags incorporating printed sensors and at the same time combining the benefits of passive and active tags. The industrial interest of this concept required full commercialization and Sensible Solutions Sweden AB was born.

Talkback Design - Talkback Design was formed in August 2007. It is a startup company that designs and develops interaction of displays and environments for stores, exhibitions, fairs and packaging.  Talkback Design’s business is based on adding message functions to stimulate more than one sense. There may be one displays with motion or touch sensors, sound and lighting effects in your store environment or for your outdoor billboards.  Talkback Design can also work with digital information that can be reached by phone by pressing a button.

MidDec Scandinavia AB  - Started in a joint development project with RTI Electronics. The research done by RTI and STC has resulted in a new dose profile detector with 100 times higher sensitivity compared to present technology. The sensor element and a part of the probe is assembled by a spin-off company, MidDec Scandinavia AB, which deliver the product to RTI electronics for further assembling and finally testing.

Soon to be spin-off companies:

RPM-sensor – In control systems and condition monitoring systems for rotating machineries, parameters such as revolutions per minutes (RPM), momentary angular speed and acceleration, torque, and power are all of interest for engines, turbines, wheels, and missiles. Measuring vibrations, unbalances, engine misfires, and loading conditions are also important. In contrast to all other existing sensors that are based on two coupled parts; stator and rotor; this RPM-sensor only consist of one part that is mounted on the rotating shaft (rotor). This solution simplifies the sensor design and allows more flexibility in installation. One interesting property of this sensor is that it gives higher accuracy for higher RPMs. The RPM-sensor is based on the SENTIO32 platform and is packaged in a custom design case that is water-proof. In the current configuration we evaluate its performance up to 6 000 RPM but it could be configured with device that allows speeds over 12 000 RPM.

OnTop - Online paper surface characterization. It measures the topography of the end of a path in real time. The meter can automatically monitor and log the topographic readings across the paper surface. In this way, each square meter of paper produced a mark of quality.

ArcMage AB – Prepared submission to ALMI regarding exploitation of MediaSense in regard of Energy-sensing.

Sense-A-Vision AB - Sense-A-Vision AB is an idea for the name of a new startup company selling a product called Vision Sensor and related services for embedded electronic design. A Vision Sensor is used for machine vision based optical contactless measurements and it is characterized by small physical dimensions, high speed and low power consumption. This sensor technology is offered as a standalone device or for integration into customer’s own products as an embedded electronic sensor. Customers can be found in car industry, process industry or manufacturers of other products that can be improved by the use of a Vision Sensor. Customer’s products will thus gain a higher user value by increased functionality and intelligence. This in turn leads to higher sales for the customers of Sense-A-Vision AB. This business idea was rewarded by Venture Cup Nord at Umeå, December 2010.
