5th Fennoscandian Dendroecological Fieldweek, Sweden, Sep. 25 – Oct. 2, 2011

Organized by Julia Rauchfuss (Mid-Sweden University, Sweden) and Igor Drobyshev (SLU, Sweden & University of Quebec at Abitibi-Temisqamingue, Canada) with help from many. The course is supported by the PRIFOR network through a grant by SNS (SamNordisk Skogsforskning) and arranged in collaboration with the Dendrochronological Laboratory at SLU, Alnarp.

Location: Älggårdsberget, Bispgården, Västernorrland, Sweden

GPS-coordinates: Lat 63.0098°N Lon 16.6704°E

General Content

This fieldweek will be a field-based course and will give a thorough introduction to the dendroecological methods both in the field and the lab. The course will cover the following areas: sampling methods (coring and/or sampling with chain-saw), sample preparation in the lab, crossdating methods, and data analysis. In addition, we will provide a range of lectures on major dendrochronological topics (including dendroclimatology, forest history reconstructions, statistical methods).

Invited lecturers (as of now) are Evan Larson (University of Wisconsin-Platteville, USA; Mid-Sweden University), Igor Drobyshev (SLU, Sweden; University of Quebec at Abitibi-Temisqamingue, Canada), and Shawn Fraver (US Forest Service, USA).

Language

The course will be held in English.

Participants

The course is open to all, but we especially would like to encourage students to apply. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to receive 4.5 credit points (ECTS). For more information on receiving credit points contact Julia Rauchfuss (julia.rauchfuss@miun.se).

Costs

The cost for the fieldweek is 2000 SEK (which are approximately 230 Euros right now). There are small number of grants available to cover the registration fee and for partial travel support. The wish to apply for those should be noted on the application.

Registration/Application

Please send the Application form and a brief CV to Julia Rauchfuss (julia.rauchfuss@miun.se). Deadline for sending those two things is April 15, 2011. Participants will be notified within the next two weeks of their acceptance to the course. The course fee is due a week after acceptance via bank transfer. More information on how to proceed with the payment will be given later.

Transportation

The closest airport is Sundsvall/Härnosand (airport code SDL). However, train connections from Arlanda (Stockholm airport, ARN) are very convenient. Transportation from Sundsvall to Bispgården and back will be provided. Try to be in Sundsvall on Sunday (Sep. 25, 2011) by around 4pm and try to get a train, bus, flight from Sundsvall on Sunday (Oct. 2, 2011) after 10am.

Keep in mind that the pricing system for SJ (one of the major rail companies in Sweden) is such that the prices become cheaper 90 days before the travel date. After that they become progressively more expensive as customer buy their tickets. It is strongly recommended that you book your tickets beforehand to get a better price and to assure a seat on the train that you want to travel on.
