English
English is a world language spoken by about one-fifth of the world's population. In addition, the English-speaking culture affects a great many people far beyond their own language boundaries.
Speaking and writing English has therefore become one of the most important skills you can take with you into working life.
Studying English at Mid Sweden University provides a solid insight into the literature and social structure of English-speaking countries, as well as sought-after skills in speech, writing and analytical skills. Such knowledge, insights and skills are becoming increasingly important wherever you work.
There are suitable courses for those who have a keen interest in the English language or English literature, society and culture. The English programme is offered as freestanding courses at Campus Sundsvall or via distance learning online.
You can study English at the undergraduate level (A-, B- and C-courses), as well as at the advanced level. At advanced level in the form of a master's degree.
The A-level course focuses on grammar, the study of contemporary literature, culture and society in English-speaking countries, as well as oral and written proficiency.
The B-course adds a general linguistic perspective to the language, sheds light on the study of literature from a transatlantic and global point of view, and further develops skills training and analytical skills.
The C-course deepens your knowledge of and in language and literature and sharpens your ability to think critically through studies of both linguistic and literary theories. The course also includes the writing of a scientific paper.
The Master's Programme in English Studies is a distance education that includes five components: an introductory module on the humanities as a discipline, two modules focusing on advanced literary theory and advanced linguistics theory, and a module consisting of elective courses with a linguistic or literary orientation and with a focus on methodology. The last module includes the writing of a longer scientific paper. Some of the courses included in the programme can also be studied as freestanding courses.
All courses at undergraduate and graduate level can be taken at a distance with the help of an easily accessible, internet-based learning platform and various IT tools. Courses at A-, B- and C-level can also be taken as campus courses in Sundsvall.
In addition to the courses offered at undergraduate and graduate level, so-called extension courses are also offered, such as Business Writing, 7.5 credits. Extension courses can be included in the degree but do not qualify for the next level of progression.
English is also a postgraduate subject and offers postgraduate education. The aim of the programme is for the doctoral student to acquire in-depth knowledge and a broader orientation in the subject of English, as well as a scientific approach and the skills in research methodology required to write a doctoral thesis of good quality.
