Distance Education Trends: Integrating new technologies to foster student interaction and collaboration
Current trends in the field of distance education indicate a shift in pedagogical perspectives and theoretical frameworks,
with student interaction at the heart of learner-centered constructivist environments. The purpose of this article is to explore the benefits
of using emerging technology tools such as wikis, blogs, and podcasts to foster student interaction in online learning. It also reviews social
software applications ... By Yoany Beldarrain, Distance Education Volume 27, Number 2, August, 2006

A Nomad's Guide to Learning and Social Software
Innovations in educational technology are often seen as opportunities to
transform learning, and social software (blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, etc.) is no
exception. But are the tensions between pedagogies and social software the result of
attempts to make the latter conform to traditional teaching practices, or are they signs
of real opportunities for rethinking learning processes? In this article, I explore the
role that social software can play in new models of learning and participating in
society... By Ulises Mejias , doctoral academic at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York

Social interaction in corporate e-learning: when is it necessary?
When we work to design and implement learning solutions, we often bring
our biases and preferences with us. One of those might be a strong belief in the
importance of social interaction in learning, particularly for those of us who value
constructivism. This article demonstrates that there are not only some learning
processes that can be done individually, but also how they can complement social
learning interactions. The case also demonstrates where the application of individual
approaches can help make elearning as effective and efficient as it can be, particulary
in time pressured environments. For those newer to e-learning, the paper offers a clear
introduction to e-learning, social constructivism and social interaction... By Frank Bate, PhD researcher Murdoch University, Western Australia,

Teachers’ Invisible Presence in Net-based Distance Education
Conferencing – or dialogue – has always been a core activity in
liberal adult education. More recently, attempts have been made to transfer such
conversations online in the form of computer-mediated conferencing. This transfer
has raised a range of pedagogical questions, most notably “Can established
practices be continued? Or must new forms of participation and group management
be established?... By Agneta Hult, Ethel Dahlgren, David Hamilton and Tor Söderström

Collaborative learning: group work and study teams

A Triple Helix of Learning Processes: How to cultivate learning, communication and collaboration among
distance-education learners
This work focuses on collaborative

distance learners experience more loneliness, technical problems and lack of stimulation than face-to-face
learners do.

Taking discussion online
Online discussion allows students
to interact with classmates outside class. An online discussion is not fixed in time or space: students
can log on at any time from any Internet-enabled computer to seek clarification for issues they encounter
in their coursework, to discuss topics raised in class, or to initiate new discussions on related topics.
A successful online discussion has the same synergistic effect of group or in-class discussion, in which
students build on one another's perspectives to gain a deeper understanding of the materials.

This study describes the community building process of virtual
learning teams as they form, establish roles and group norms, and
address conflict. Students enrolled in an HRD masters program taught
entirely online were studied to determine (1) how virtual learning
teams develop their group process, and (2) what process and strategies
they use as they work through the stages of group development. Both
quantitative and qualitative methods of inquiry were used to capture
the dynamic interaction within groups and the underlying factors that
guided group process and decision-making...

You've
got mail. Is that all there is? Use of the Internet for literary
studies in Swedish university education and research
By
Erik Peurel In February 2000 a survey was conducted among scholars teaching
literature at universities and university colleges in Sweden. The
survey consisted of 23 questions dealing with the scholars' use of
the Internet in their teaching and research. The questions were
answered by 105 of the 176 scholars to whom they were distributed.
The survey shows that the respondents seem to be comfortable with
using the Internet for communication, whereas they very rarely use
it for information retrieval or dissemination of research results.
The results of the survey are discussed in terms of research
traditions within the field of the humanities. Human IT, 2001 nr.
