Systems for long-term preservation

Spara favorit 29 nov november 2012

These days we produce more records than ever before. At the same time many of these records are less reliable, retrievable or accessible than ever before. Systems generate, manage, store and make digital data accessible using proprietary technologies and media.

Therefore, long-term preservation of digital information is threatened by storage media with short lifespans, hardware and software that becomes quickly obsolete, and proprietary file formats in code that cannot be interpreted. One of the major problems with the long-term preservation of digital records is the lack of reliable methods to ensure that the digital information is preserved and that we will be able to access this information over time.

For the last five years there has been an increasing interest in digital sustainability. The OAIS-model has been one of most discussed methods. It was developed by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) as a first step towards generating formal standards for long-term reservation of Space Science data. It is a conceptual framework rather than a fully-fledged, prescriptive standard, and is intended to identify the necessary features of an archival information system rather than recommend any particular implementation.

The development of sustainable repositories to preserve digital  Objects is high on the agenda for many national archives. Summer 2009 the National Archive of Sweden adopted new regulations for long-term preservation. Authorities must establish their own strategy for preserving electronic documents. The strategy should indicate the actions taken to ensure preservation. This will encourage higher standards and create more pressure for the authorities which must allocate resources to planning and implementing long-term preservation of their information.

There are a number of activities and projects around Sweden which now implements open source products, buy preservation resources in the cloud or buy traditional commercial products on the market. This sub-project's intention is to create a map over these initiatives.
