The art hub continues to grow – new project will unite creativity, art and academia
After the success during Mid Sweden University's anniversary week last year, the Art Hub is now taking the next step. With support from Vice-Chancellor's funds, the initiative will develop over the next year, with new exhibitions, workshops and lectures where art, creativity and science meet.
Behind the Art Hub are the employees and artists Edith Andresen, Victoria Engholm and Lena Sjödin Roman, who together want to create a long-term meeting place for creativity within the university.
"During the anniversary week, we saw how strong the need is for creative contexts. People stayed for a long time, talked, created together and met across subject boundaries. Now we want to continue to build on that energy," says Edith Andresen.
Opens up for new perspectives
The Art Hub started as part of Mid Sweden University's 20th anniversary on campus Sundsvall, where employees with artistic practice were invited to exhibit works on the theme "Creative Force Fields". The program also included open workshops and lectures on art, society, and science. The opening attracted a large audience and was very much appreciated.
"It became very clear how art can open up new conversations and perspectives, even in an academic environment. Creativity is not only about artistic creation, but also about thinking in new ways, daring to experiment and finding new ways to understand the world," says Victoria Engholm.
Process and curiosity
Now the work continues on an autumn salon in Sundsvall and a spring salon in Östersund. In connection with each exhibition, workshops are arranged where employees have the opportunity to try out different creative techniques – regardless of previous experience. Those who wish will also be able to exhibit their work in connection with the openings.
"We want to lower the thresholds for creativity. Many people carry a creative longing but perhaps think that you have to be a trained artist to participate. The art hub is just as much about the process, curiosity and meeting people," says Lena Sjödin Roman.
Already on 26 May, the first workshop will be held in Sundsvall. More details about time and place will come soon.
New exciting lecturers
During the year, the Art Hub will also invite external lecturers for conversations about art, society, creativity and science. During the anniversary week last year, Professor Roberto Verganti from the Stockholm School of Economics and artists Ida Rödén and Tomas Håkki Eriksson participated, whose lectures attracted large audiences and sparked many conversations.
Mid Sweden University's Vice-Chancellor Anders Fällström sees the initiative as an important initiative.
"Universities need environments where creativity and reflection can take place. Art and culture help us to think more freely, see new connections and understand both society and ourselves in deeper ways. Therefore, this is an important investment, both for the university and for the society we are part of," says Anders Fällström.
An open call for the Autumn Salon will be sent out separately later, so keep an eye out for invitations to the workshop and the Autumn Salon.
