Fire and Rescue Service exercises
In 2019 the Fire and Rescue Service of Jämtland County performed a number of simulation exercises in RCR Simulation Lab. The simulated scenario involved rescue service personnel having to perform emergency procedures, including CPR, during the hectic aftermath of a violent attack in a public space.
A shopping center full of customers was constructed in a Virtual Reality software program and streamed in real-time to projectors in the lab's simulation room, enabling an artificial and highly immersive 360-degree environment. Other simulation technologies that amplified the immersive experience included custom made surround sound and stage lighting as well as floor vibration and smoke. Additionally, the simulation room was furnished and had extras acting as distressed customers at the mall. The scenario was developed during continuous meetings with the RCR staff and the Fire and Rescue Service. After the exercises, participants were gathered for debriefing and evaluation.
The goal of the exercise was to train rescue service personnel for violent events and to provide health care during stressful circumstances. The scenario involved a high sound volume with evacuation alarms, noise and moving crowds of people. This simulation exercise provided a safe approach to train unsafe situations.
