The Master by Research Programme in Engineering Physics targets students who are highly motivated to develop skills and knowledge for a future career in academic or industrial research and development.
The programme contains a number of advanced level courses, but is dominated by your individual project that after two years will lead up to your Master thesis. You will be a member of one of our research groups for the duration of the education and carry out research together with the other scientists. You will be appointed an individual supervisor who will guide you through the work. The research projects can be carried out in companies as well, but also in these cases we are providing you with a clear affiliation to an academic research group and a supervisor.
Only a few students will be admitted and on an individual level. If you have shown excellent results in your Bachelor studies and are self-motivated to further specialize in your field academically, this programme could be something for you.
At Mid Sweden University, suitable master projects for the degree of Master by Research (MbR) in Engineering Physics can currently be offered within the following areas:
Materials science for green energy: Energy harvestingWe are currently running projects on alternative wind power, thermo-electric power generation, and solar power. The projects focus on new materials and new methods for energy harvesting. As MbR student within this field you will join the research groups to work with materials such as e.g. piezoelectric materials, cellulose, graphene and graphite, molybdenum disulfide, etc. and with advanced characterization methods such as electron microscopy, electric measurements (piezoelectric and/or photovoltaic), x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, etc. and process methods such as printing and laser processing.
Materials science for green energy: Energy storageWe perform research on surfaces and materials for energy storage devices such as supercapacitors and batteries. As MbR student within this field you will join a research group and work with materials such as e.g. graphite and graphene, nano particles, various electrolytes, you will use advanced characterization methods such as electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, Raman spectroscopy, viscometry, dynamic light scattering etc. and process methods such as exfoliation, 3D printing and coating methods.
