One of our former master's students in Electronics,Till Dreier, is one of eight nominees in the Swedish Embedded Award in the Student category. The winner will be appointed in November during the conference Swedish Embedded Conference.

The other three nominees are: Dr. Najeem Lawal, STC, Jan-Oliver Schöwerling, student at Polytechnic in Osnabrück and Dr. Dzimitry Maneuski, University of Glasgow. Over the past 2.5 years, Till Dreier has worked with a project around a system that will serve as a super fast X-ray camera for radiation. Together with the University of Glasgow, he has developed the system that connects the radiation detector to a computer and also provides access to the FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array), a type of device used in electronic circuits, which in turn manages communication and data flow.

- Our idea was that you should have access to the FPGA so that you can process real-time data and thus reduce the amount of data that has to be transferred to the computer. This means that you can customize the system for different applications. For example, it is possible to use it as an X-ray camera in medicine and industry, such as material analysis, such as dosimeters to monitor the radiation dose, and in research, for example, for particle analysis, Till says.

In practice, his system thus means that a standard laptop can now be used for x-ray and particle measurements. Till Dreier is based on a hybrid pixel detector from the Cern Laboratory, called Timepix3, which he then developed the reading electronics and software for. For his contribution, he has been nominated for the Swedish Embedded Award, the Student category.

-It's a very prestigious award for anyone who works with embedded systems. It feels great fun that so many people appreciate what we have worked with. Nomination is a great way to show it to a wider audience, he says.

Till Dreier studied at the Master -by-Research in Electronics in the Radiation Sensor Systems Group, which is part of the Electronic Engineering Department (EKS) at Mid Sweden University, from August 2015 to July 2018. In August 2014. Before coming to Sweden, he studied Electrical Engineering at Hochschule Osnabrück in northern Germany. Till is currently a industrial PhD student at Lund University and Excillum

Timepix3

Timepix3 is a hybrid pixel detector consisting of a 256x256 pixel matrix for energy resolved photon and particle measurements with a 1.56 ns resolution. The chip is being developed by the Medipix group at CERN, leading Medipix cooperation with several international members one of them Mid Sweden University.

The system presented here manages configuration and high speed data transfer between the Timpix3 chip and the computer. This system makes it possible to use a standard laptop as a measurement system for x-ray or particle measurements. The system is FPGA-based with built-in pre-processing interface and communication is run through USB 3.0, because the interface is fast enough and is available on all modern computers.

Swedish Embedded Award

Is awarded annually to successful projects within embedded systems. In order to be nominated, the constructions need a great content of innovative thinking that will lead to an interesting commercial end product. The prize has been awarded since 2003 by the Swedish Association of Electronics (Svensk Elektronik), the section for Embedded Technology, Electronics in the Nordic region (Elektronik i Norden).
