Dr. Mohamed Eldefrawy was granted 148 500 SEK by STINT to initiate a research collaboration between the Mid Sweden University and the American University in Cairo, Egypt, to address the foreseen security challenges for the Internet of Things (IoT) networks.
IoT works as a group of smart devices that interact collaboratively between each other to achieve a planned goal. Security and privacy shortcomings still requires a lot of research and development. The objective of this new cooperation is to set up and exchange research methods and case studies to find solutions to overcome IoT inefficiencies.

For the application, Dr. Eldefrawy looked for a university to collaborate with in Industrial IoT. His choice fell on The American University in Cairo that is one of the most recognized universities in the region within the field. There he got in contact with Associate Prof. Karim G. Seddik who is not only an Associate Professor at the Electronics and communication-engineering department but also a former colleague to Mohamed at the Alexandria University in Egypt. Now they will start a research collaboration and Mohamed is eager to visit the university to get a deeper presentation of the research conducted there.
PhD-student Teklay Gebremichael will also join to meet Associate Prof. Seddik who will guide him into his research. This collaboration will be preformed through a joint supervision of MSc and PhD students to facilitate and consolidate the continuity of the joint collaboration afterwards. There will also be mutual research visits and co-organized workshops. The goal is to continue the research collaboration with a joint application for a research project within Industrial IoT security and privacy.

Assoc. Prof. Karim G. Seddik (Ph.D., University of Maryland College Park 2008) is an associate professor in the Electronics and Communications Engineering Department at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt. Before joining AUC, he was an assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at Alexandria University, Egypt. Dr. Seddik received the B.S. (with highest honors) and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt, in 2001 and 2004, respectively.
He received his Ph.D. degree at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Maryland, College Park 2008. His research interests span wide areas in wireless communications and networks; he has published more than 100 papers in top journals and conferences in these research areas. Dr. Seddik has served on the technical program committees of numerous IEEE conferences in the areas of wireless networks and mobile computing.
Dr. Seddik is a recipient of the Egyptian state encouragement award in 2016, the Certificate of Honor from the Egyptian President for being ranked first among all departments in College of Engineering, Alexandria University in 2002, the Graduate School Fellowship from the University of Maryland in 2004 and 2005, and the Future Faculty Program Fellowship from the University of Maryland in 2007.
