Welcome Morteza Seyed Ebadi who is our new doctoral student here at STC. He has joined the research group Power Electronics and works in the FIBER project whre he will follow new techniques and methods for efficient installation of optical fiber networks.

Seyed Morteza Ebadi, PhD

How did you become interested in Electrical Engineering?

My father father is my role model! He worked for the Ministry of Energy in Iran and his job has spurred my interest in Electrical Engineering. As a little kid, he took my brother and me to his work, Montazer Ghaem Power Plant. We were acquainted with electrical devices such as generators, electrical machines, and turbines among. We followed his example and my older brother specialized in Electrical and Power Engineering, while I opted to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering for my undergraduate studies at the Karaj Islamic Azad University (KIAU), Karaj, Iran.

I did my Bachelor Science thesis on IEEE 802.11 Standards and its Architectures. In my research I was focusing on WLAN technology, Next Generation Networks (NGNs), and Network Architecture. The next-generation network (NGN) is body of key architectural changes in telecommunication core and access network. NGN is a network in which all data and information such as music, voice, video etc. can be dispatched.

After my bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering I was working as a self-employed in the field of communications and network engineering, I established a company with my brother that offered consulting engineering services to industrial factories located in my hometown.

After a while, I felt the urge to pursue a Master’s degree and I was admitted at Tehran Science and Research Branch (IAUKSH), Iran, for my postgraduate studies in Electrical and Communication Engineering. There I focused on design and analysis of plasmonic filters with both nanometric size and low loss particularly at telecommunication wavelengths for my M.Sc. research project.

After successfully finished the M.Sc. degree with first class honors, I have during the past four years worked as an Executive Manager for a consulting electrical engineering company.

I have been very lucky to work and collaborate with people from different backgrounds and fields, coming from other countries, and with my colleagues around the country, and thus, have built up a huge network of people by going to conferences, taking part in industry events, and reaching out to people, I admire!

Why did you choose Mid Sweden University for your PhD?
Generally speaking, Sweden for many years has been among the best countries in terms of the highest standard of living, providing many different social and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Mid Sweden University has an effective collaboration with some of the best institutions, skilled and enterprising professors, scientists and researchers. For me it is a unique opportunity to meet and work with people from different backgrounds. The access to the state-of-the-art technology and to can gain invaluable hands-on experience and skills, motivated me to enthusiastically apply for the PhD position.

The research project that I am working on it is an EU-funded project and will be a part of the bigger project called FIBER. I will follow new techniques and methods for efficient installation of optical fiber networks. The main goal is the design and fabrication of ultra-small radio beacons that can be embedded in fiber optic duct. We will collaborate with various regional and national partners, as well as other researchers at STC Centre.  This research is a perfect match to my research interests and skills.

Precisely, we are looking to develop innovative solutions so that the design and fabrication of an ultra-small radio beacon for fiber optic duct would be feasible. The main challenges are to design and develop cost-effective ultra-small radio transmitters that can be mounted on a fiber duct. Then, design, optimization, and implementation of antenna arrays under environment constraints would be the second stage of the project.
