New Visiting Professor ‑ Henry Radamson

Mon 20 Aug 2018 00:00

We welcome your new Visiting Professor Henry Radamson! Henry is currently professor and senior fellow at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. His research is within nanomaterials, nanophotonics and nanosensing. At STC he will perform environmental research by developing a nano chip to detect contamination in water.

Henry Radamson

Can you tell us a little about your research here at Mid Sweden University?

I will be a visiting professor at 25 percent from July 2018. That means I will be here two-three months a year. I will be a part of a research group with researchers and professors, focusing on building a prototype chip to detect and indicate heavy metals and other forms of contamination in the water. There are many remains from other industries since 50-100 years ago, which contains heavy metals. With this future indicator, it will be easy to find out if the water is contaminated by water samples.

The chip is manufactured in China, as the technology does not exist here yet, and we will functionalize it in the lab here in Sundsvall. We will develop it to be able detect different material, for instance arsenic, which affects your liver. The chip is in the size of 5 to 5 mm and inside the chip you have many nanowires below 100 nanometer Contacts to those nanowires, give signals if you have a material in the water or not.

I want to change the daily life for people and save lives.

Why did you choose your area of expertise?

I want to change the daily life for people and save lives. For instance, In Beijing I am developing silicon photonics and imaging (Short Wave Infra Red Camera Chip) for finding cancer tumors at an early stage. In the future, I hope to develop a camera that you can use in your mobile phone to detect changes in patterns in your body. If you see changes, you can make an appointment to the doctor for further tests. The same with water contaminations, if you have a small indicator, you can take water samples before taking a swim in the lake, and avoid heavy metals and prolong your life.

What do you think of Mid Sweden University and Sundsvall?

It is my first time at Mid Sweden University. I think that you have an important environmental profile here, compared to the more traditional universities. In this way you have a good chance to make an impact. I really like it here, the people are friendly and say hello to you. Me and my wife and our two children will eventually search for an apartment here!
