AI‑cooperation with the Swedish Social Insurance Agency
A new investment in research on AI becomes a reality when Mid Sweden University and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency's IT department sign agreements. The parties fund the investment jointly and now a PhD student will be recruited.
- We have extensive experience of collaborating with the industry around doctoral students and research projects and the results are very good. As we now take the step and collaborate in the government sector as well, I hope it can inspire other authorities. Society has a lot to gain from it, says Hans-Erik Nilsson, dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Media at Mid Sweden University.
The Swedish Social Insurance Agency's IT department and Mid Sweden University have for one year conducted pre-studies in AI and technology for blockchains. In the meantime, discussions have also been held on how collaboration could be deepened and one step is now the joint agreement to jointly finance a PhD student in AI.
- We have one of Sweden's largest data centers and now we can build knowledge about machine learning analysis of our data sets. By extension, this makes us an even better supplier of IT services and IT operations, says Peter Axelborn, business area manager, Försäkringskassan, IT production.
The funding ensures a PhD student position for four years and that the student receives a supervisor. The goal is for the student to start working during the first half of 2020.
- The assignment for the new PhD student should be very attractive - it is about helping to develop the AI solutions of the future together with the Swedish Insurance Agency's competent IT team and at the same time combining it with its own drive for research, says Hans-Erik Nilsson.
