We warmly welcome Dr. Abdolamir Karbalaie, new Postdoc here at STC! He is joining the MiLo project - the environment into the control loop - where he will be investigating 3D imaging for improving segmentation, positioning, and categorization of objects in a safety-critical environment

Can you tell us a little about your background?

I always enjoyed mathematics and physics in high school, so I decided to major in it in college. I studied Pure Mathematics at Isfahan University, Iran. I studied Pure Mathematics in undergraduate because I felt that this would keep my options open in terms of future career paths. I got my Master's in Mathematics at the Isfahan University of Technology, Iran.  After completing a teacher education program, I start my new career in teaching mathematics and statistics at Islamic Azad University, Najafabad Branch.

I didn’t care what field I was in – I was enjoying learning new things. Since the beginning of my Master's program, I was deeply interested in the mathematical application in image processing methods. Therefore I followed my passion for enriching my knowledge in image processing techniques. I did my Ph.D. in Applied Medical Engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. The aim of my research in Ph.D. was to find an optimal combination of factors in clinical data and morphological details of capillaries in capillaroscopic images to improve diagnostic accuracy in patients with autoimmune disease.

What is your area of interest?

My areas of interest include Image and Video Processing, Multidimensional Data Analysis and Visualization, Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing.

What is it that you are going to investigate /research here at STC?

I will investigate 3D imaging for improving segmentation, positioning, and categorization of objects in a safety-critical environment.

Why did you choose Mid Sweden University?

I originally chose to attend Mid Sweden University because the research topic for the MiLo project was interesting to me. The multidisciplinary character of this project will provide me with a much greater understanding of the complex topic of multidimensional image analysis. I’m so glad I decided to go to Mid Sweden University.

How do you like it here so far?

I like it; the people are very friendly. The staff and my colleagues are so nice and very supportive. I am very happy to work in a city that has friendly people with a smiling face, which gives a feeling that you are at a good friend's house.

What do you do in your spare time?

I usually spend my free time with my wife and two sons. I also enjoy reading books and watching movies because it helps to relax my mind and body.
