STC would like to welcome a new PhD student, Yali Nie. Yali has an MSc in Electronic Engineer and she will focus her research on the area of Deep Learning. Her supervisor is Assistant Professor Jan Lundgren.

Nie Yali, doktorand STC

Can you tell us a little about your background?

I finished my bachelor in Computer Science in China in 2015 at Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. After that I went to Chonbuk National University in South Korea to do my master degree in Electronic Engineer. My main topics are Human Pose Estimation and Object Detection by machine learning algorithm. When I obtained my master degree in 2018, I started working for Technology Company in China. After I worked a few months, I found that I am very interested in research work. That is why I applied for a PhD position.

What is your area of interest?

My area is machine learning algorithms which is a very hot topic for the moment. I am interested in this area as machine learning can be applied to solve real world problems. And deep learning is a sub-topic of machine learning. Deep learning is much more powerful to solve AI problems. I have for example worked in project to detect tomato disease by image processing and also key point detection for pose estimation of humans. The purpose was to recognize the main parts of one person. It can be used within the medical area.

What is it that you are going to investigate in your Ph.D?

I am still deciding the specifics in deep learning, but it will be within medical image processing, towards Melanoma Detection, skin cancer. When I applied for my PhD I was searching for a topic similar to mine and I found it here in Sundsvall.

How do you like it here at Mid Sweden University?

I really like this university. It is a small university with a very friendly atmosphere. Especially my supervisor Jan, he is much helpful and easy going. I believe to come here for PhD is a right choice. I have an apartment nearby, just a few minutes away.

What do you do in your spare time?

Living in Sundsvall is quite peaceful and comfortable. After I get my personal number, I am going to get a gym card as exercise is important for both physical and mental health. Then I can go to the gym every day after I finish my work! I have also joined a Swedish classes once a week. I am trying to learn this new language because and I can really would like to know more about the Swedish culture. I enjoy cooking when I am home. I always try to find new recipes, which is easy to try out these days thanks to the Internet.
