Welcome Joakim Edlund - new PhD student

Save favourite 21 Mar March 2019

Meet our new PhD student Joakim Edlund! He will be working in the research group Realistic 3D. He and his research colleagues will investigate surveillance and security for airports within the MiLo project.

Can you tell us a little about your background?

I grew up outside of Sundsvall, moved to Göteborg in 2007 to study engineering physics with a master in theoretical physics at Chalmers. After that, I started a product development company with a friend, helping small companies develop their ideas into products. We were also working on our own ideas, and soon our company turned into a startup company working on software and hardware for Virtual Reality. I moved back to Sundsvall four years ago to get closer to the mountains again.

What is your area of interest?

I've always been interested in robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning and I like complex problems. After a detour in theoretical physics, I've now come back to my real interests. Doing research in image analysis is a perfect fit, combining these topics. The field is a hot topic nowadays and a lot is happening in several areas.

What is it that you are going to investigate in here at STC?

The funding for my PhD comes from the MiLo project, our research group will investigate surveillance and security in airports. My work will be within multidimensional image analysis, coming up with new, effective ways of analysing lots of data coming from several cameras.

How do you like it here at Mid Sweden University?

I like that Mid Sweden University is a small university. It's easy to meet and discuss with people from other research areas.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy being outside. Sometimes I work in my forest. I have also built a cabin outside of Åre where I spend some time snowboarding, split boards, downhill biking, mountain biking. Other than that, I like building things, my current project is to restore an old off road military car, converting it to a camper van.
