BrightnESS - Building a research infrastructure and synergies for highest scientific impact on ESS

BrightnESS is a European Union-funded project within the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme. There are 18 European institutes and universities from 11 countries participating in the BrightnESS partnership. The total budget is nearly €20 M and the duration of the project will be three years. And Mid Sweden University is a part of the project.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, will enable both fundamental and applied research. BrightnESS is an integrated program to ensure that key challenges are met in order to build an ESS that can deliver high impact scientific and technological knowledge.

The importance of ESS has been recognised by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), which has prioritised it as one of three Research Infrastructures. However, constructing the most powerful spallation neutron source will not, in itself, ensure the maximum scientific or technological impact. The BrightnESS proposal will ensure that:

  • The extensive knowledge and skills of European companies and institutes are best deployed for the construction and operation of ESS.
  • Technology transfer between ESS and European institutions and companies is optimised.
  • The maximum technical performance is obtained from the ESS target, moderators and detectors in order to deliver world class science and insights for materials technology and innovation.

The aim of the project is to support the construction of ESS in key technical areas and in-kind coordination. The grant provides resources for the development, testing and optimisation of ESS’s state-of-the-art technologies. It also supports the research infrastructure to move from its initial planning phase to the implementation phase, as well as to maintain alignment between the physical construction of the site and the development and delivery of vital equipment and components.
