Meet Tran Thanh ‑ new PhD student at STC
We would like to welcome a new PhD student - Tran Thanh, to STC Research Centre. Here you will find a short interview with her to find out more about her background and what research fields she will focus on.
Can you tell a little about your background?
I have a bachelor degree in Information Technology from Water Resources University, Vietnam and a Master of Engineering in IT Convergence and Application Engineering from Pukyong National University, South Korea. My main topic is medical image processing using deep learning. When I graduated master course I worked for Electronic Optical System Center - a key research and production unit of Viettel specialized in the military sector in Vietnam. My research here focuses on object tracking, object classification, and motion detection using machine learning and deep learning algorithm.
What is your area of interest?
My research interest is computer vision, medical image processing, and deep learning.
What is it that you are going to investigate /research here at STC?
I’m going to work with sound characterization using machine learning and deep learning. The research will make the model detect damages or some abnormal working conditions of the machines using sound signals that they can generate. Besides, we would like to locate and measure noise in industrial (ex: construction noise).
Why did you choose Mid Sweden University?
Sweden is one of the world’s most modern countries with a high-quality education system. Besides, the Swedish people are friendly. Therefore, I decided to find a chance to study in Sweden. Luckily, my supervisor – Jan Lundgren had an open position for a new Ph.D. student about a sound characterization project using deep learning. I think this position is really suitable with my research interest and I can contribute to the success of the project.
How do you like it here so far?
Sweden is one of the best places to visit on earth because of its amazing climate, the best views, and fresh air. Start a new life in another country is not easy. Thank my supervisor and other colleagues in our department help me settle down here.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy shopping, going hiking, going for sightseeing and swimming. But I think it’s too cold to swim in Sundsvall. Instead, I will go to the gym if my research is not too busy. I also love to cook even as I’m not good at cooking. I really like to try new recipes which I think it will be delicious.
