Chibuzo Joseph Nnonyelu, new Postdoc at STC since December 2021. He will participate in research geared towards bridging the gap between AI and sound sensor array technology.

Chibuzo Joseph Nnonyelu

When did you move to Sweden and how has it been so far, considering covid and restrictions?

I arrived in Sweden in December 2021. I wouldn’t say getting here was a smooth process considering the travel restrictions around the world. Luckily it was easier travelling to Sweden with a residence permit. Socially, this is a wrong time to arrive in Sweden due to the COVID restrictions. But this offers ample time to focus on research with little “distractions”.

What are you going to do?

At STC and the Departement of Electronics Design, I will participate in research geared towards bridging the gap between AI and sound sensor array technology by developing methodologies for implementing sound arrays for AI supported solutions.

Where are you from and what did you do before coming to Mid Sweden University?

I am from Awka, Anambra state in Nigeria. I attended Marist Comprehensive Academy (Uturu, Nigeria) before transferring to Government Secondary School, (Owerri, Nigeria) where I obtained the Senior Secondary Certificate in June 2003. I received the Bachelor of Engineering degree (with honors) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nigeria (Nsukka, Nigeria) in 2010 and the PhD in Electronic and Information Engineering (with focus on acoustic signal processing) from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong SAR) in 2018.

I was an Engineering Intern at DAAR Communication PLC (Nigeria) in 2009, a Radio Network Engineer at Interwireless Consultant Limited (Nigeria) between 2011-2013, a Graduate Assistant from 2013 to 2018, and a ‘Lecturer I’ from 2018 to 2021. In 2021, I was promoted to the Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Universitetslektor) position in the Department of Electrical Engineering of The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where apart from conducting research in acoustic sensor array signal processing, I taught courses in digital signal processing, measurements and instrumentation, advanced circuit theorem, and advanced mathematical methods in electrical engineering.

I serve as a reviewer for some IEEE Transactions, IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation, and Journal of Acoustical Society of America (JASA). I currently serve in the editorial board of the International Journal of Sensors and Sensor Networks and have served in the technical committee of various international conferences.

Why did you choose to apply to Mid Sweden University?

To simply put, career growth and opportunity to contribute to a better world. Working at Mid Sweden University provides ample opportunities for career growth through impactful industry-linked research at its world class research centers such as the Sensible things that communication research center.

What is your experience so far?

With the city/Sweden?

I have not been able to explore the city mainly due to the weather. However, I can say the city is safe and offers most things a foreigner might need in terms of food.

With the university?

Though I haven’t been here for long, I will say working here has been amazing. The STC research group has provides everything needed for high quality research. My interactions so far with staff members of the group and department have been amazing in terms of knowledge exchange – social and academic.

About the research conducted here.

The research I am working on is still in its early stages. However, it focuses on supporting sensor systems (microphones array precisely) with artificial intelligence in order to provide more accurate and cost-effective solutions.

What’s on your bucket list now that you live in Sundsvall?

There are many things on my bucket list. But for Sweden and Sundsvall, I would love to sight the reindeers and see the northern light. Also, I can’t wait to experience the short nights.
