Detection and localisation of eagles

Expansion of wind power in Sweden and the construction of new wind power turbines must be done with the smallest possible impact on environment. It has by experience turned out that if turbines are located at badly chosen locations, eagles get killed when being hit by turbine blades. This has motivated the wind power industry to support research in technology for survey and surveillance of eagles.


When planning for new turbines to be built, knowledge about population of eagles and the geographical distribution is needed. In addition, when a set of turbines are in production, there is a need for online surveillance and detection of eagles so that turbines can be stopped in order to avoid eagles to get killed. This project is aimed at developing new novel technology for surveillance of large volumes of sky. Networks of visual sensor nodes are suggested to be used for such systems.
