Guest professor Syed Ali Hassan launches a new book on IoT

The book “Wireless-powered Backscatter Communications for Internet of Things” provides and assesses the techniques required for the realization of practical wireless-powered backscatter systems for large-scale and intelligent IoT networks. It explores the deployment, reliability, and security aspects of backscatter devices for both indoor and outdoor environments. The book also sheds light on some of the recently evolving technologies such as artificial intelligence / machine learning, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and multi-tone carrier techniques and identifies their application in backscatter communications. In addition, it offers a valuable blueprint for future studies in the domains of intelligent reflective surfaces, ambient backscatter communications and massive IoT networks.

Syed Ali Hassan works as an Associate Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), where he is heading the Information Processing and Transmission (IPT) research group, which focuses on various aspects of theoretical communications. Dr. Hassan has been working in collaboration with STC at MIUN from 2017 with Prof. Mikael Gidlund’s research group. Together, they won a STINT collaborative project initially on designing efficient communication techniques for future smart cities and have co-authored over a dozen of research publications in various prestigious journals and conferences. A part of their mutual collaboration has also appeared as a chapter in the subject book on IOT where the two research groups discussed their findings on future technologies of NOMA and Backscatter communications.

As a guest professor at MIUN, Dr. Hassan is involved in collaborative research on machine learning for wireless communications with a focus on industrial IOT networks. The STC group at MIUN has a good experience in working with industrial wireless networks, however, with the emergence of new technologies tailored for IoT, specially under the umbrella of future 5G networks, Dr. Hassan’s collaborative strategy is to strengthen the research in the areas of physical layer wireless communications, signal processing for wireless communications, and machine learning for communication networks in order to maintain and expand engagement towards existing and new business partners.
