FRAMGRAF‑ improved properties of additively manufactured metals by adding graphene.
In this project, we will combine the outstanding physical and mechanical properties of graphene with the flexibility of the specialist area Additive manufacturing (AM). We will conduct a feasibility study for the manufacture of high-performance Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) reinforced with graphene.
Graphene, the world's thinnest material, has very good conductivity and is 200 times stronger than steel. It is flexible and can be stretched up to 10 percent without any remaining deformations. By combining additive manufacturing in metal with graphene technology, high-performance materials and components can be manufactured that can be used in aerospace, orthopedic manufacturing, tools, energy and other relevant industrial sectors.
The Mid Sweden University graphene project originates from the national innovation program SIO-Grafen, which aims to strengthen cross-border collaboration in the graphene area. The SIO-Grafen program vision is that Sweden will become one of the world's ten leading countries to utilize graphene to secure industrial leadership in 2030. One of the goals in the program is to gather national power and to build collaborations among important players such as universities, industry and institutes. Mid Sweden University want to help achieve that vision, and we will approach this by exploring available possibilities to use graphene in our specialist area, additive manufacturing in metal.
