In this project researchers will carry on the results from a previous project that developed a variable-speed low-voltage motor drive architecture with potentials to achieve better efficiency and performance at lower material and production costs than state-of-the-art industrial motors.
This project will focus on the implementation and production with new performance tests.
Background
This project is an advancement of a research project carried out in 2015 (Permanent Magnet DC motor with on-rotor drive system 2015). The project is based on a novel variable-speed low-voltage motor drive architecture with potentials to achieve better efficiency and performance at lower material and production costs than state-of-the-art industrial motors.
The results from the project carried out in 2015 have progressed into both a test and verification of the two-pole PMmotor prototype and the design of a rotary transformer for powering the on-rotor drive. The preliminary results gathered during the project indicated that this novel architecture is both feasible and promising. So this research project will carry on the research further and closer to a full functionality prototype for future evaluation and demonstration.
This project will mainly focus on both the implementation and production aspects and the performance testing aspects of the rotary transformer design. Once this design is tested researchers will start on the design of active MOSFET rectifier module which rectify the input voltage from AC to DC. The rectifier design will also incorporate power-factor-correction functionality to minimize the current and voltage distortion due to the rectification process and to improve the overall operation efficiency of transformer.
Objectives
- Prototyping and testing of the three-phase rotary transformer design.
- Design and verification of the active rectifier module of the on-rotor drive system.
