Study on the importance of nature for migration
The study, entitled The importance of nature in older individuals' moving decisions, is being revised for future publication in the international journal Fennia. Emma Landby and Kristin Godtman Kling have investigated the importance of natural areas when choosing a home.
Does nature have any impact on where you want to live as an elderly person and is there any difference between different groups?
Based on responses from a survey that older people have chosen to answer in Härnösand municipality and Östersund municipality, as well as interviews with older people in Östersund, the results show that nature is very important, especially if you are close to nature areas where you live right now and if you are used to to spend time in nature almost daily. We could also see that individuals sometimes adjust their expectations and habits with increasing age – those who previously spent a lot of time in larger natural areas, such as the mountains, and now have difficulty getting there appreciate that there are other types of green areas close to their home. For example, a park.
Having natural areas in connection with attractive housing options for older people is therefore an important issue that community planning should take into account.
The study will be published shortly. Keep an eye out under Publications here on the project page.
