Sustainable land use research highlighted at conference in India
At the international conference IUCN-AEL in Gujarat, India, on 4 July 2024, Professor Volker Mauerhofer presented research on sustainable land use within the EU-funded ALPMEMA project.
His presentation focused on the role of law in supporting the management of alpine meadows.
The session, which brought together experts from Australia, India, the United States and Brazil, among others, focused on how justice, governance and decentralisation can be integrated into climate and environmental law. Mauerhofer highlighted the importance of international cooperation and legal solutions to address complex socio-ecological challenges.
‘It was particularly fascinating to exchange in this session knowledge and ideas about complex socio-ecological interrelations.’ commented Professor Mauerhofer.
The conference highlighted how legal perspectives can contribute to addressing current and future environmental challenges.
The event also included a conference excursion to a world-famous stepwell and to Gujerat - the home of M. Gandhi - both of which provided excellent insights into the rich socio-cultural heritage of rural India.
