Welcome to the autumn term Zoom lectures of the Academic Resource Centre. These lectures contain useful tips and advice regarding studies and study technique; the Academic Resource Centre also offers drop-in.

The Academic Resource Centre activities for autumn start now! Every Tuesday 12:30–13:00 there will be brief lectures on subjects that are useful for all students and the possibility to ask questions. During two theme weeks, there will lectures held on all business days (12:30–13:00). The theme for week 43 (October 24–28) is thesis writing; for week 46 (November 14–18) the theme is academic writing with all lectures presented in English.

Drop-in

As mentioned earlier, the Academic Resource Centre also offers drop–in support sessions regarding academic writing, searching for articles and books, help with reference management, and help with Microsoft Word. Help with study technique is also offered in bookable sessions.

Program for Autumn 2022

Tuesday 20 September: How to Succeed in Academic Studies 

– University studies are an experience for life, but what is needed to endure them? A targeted-study support tutor talks about attitudes towards studies and presents study tips for the education journey ahead.

Tuesday 27 September: How to Study for Your Exam

– Are you studying for an exam, or perhaps retaking an exam? In this presentation you will receive advice on how to prepare yourself to achieve the best possible result.

Tuesday 4 October: Study Technique 

– The focus for this lecture is how to develop good study habits, approach course literature and achieve a balance between studies and leisure time. (This presentation is in Swedish only.)

Tuesday 11 October: Academic Writing for Second-Language Students 

– If it has been a while since you last studied, if Swedish is not your first language or if you simply wish to brush up on your language skills this lecture will cover basic rules for, among other things, linear order in Swedish. (This presentation is in Swedish only.)

Tuesday 18 October: Handling Sources 

– Your text must be coherent even though the voices of others are mixed in with your own. Tips and advice regarding things to keep in mind while separating the cited sources from your own thoughts are presented.

Week 43: Thesis Writing Theme Week 

Monday 24 October: Time, planning, setup, and cooperation for your thesis

– This presentation contains information on how to build the foundation for effective thesis writing regarding time management and building good writing-partner relationships. (This presentation is in Swedish only.)

Tuesday 25 October: How to structure a thesis

– What is a theory, really? What should you keep in mind when stating the aim of your thesis? This brief lecture provides information on the overall components that should be included and their content. (This presentation is in Swedish only.)

Wednesday 26 October: Literature Search in Databases

– When writing your thesis, it helps to know where and how to search for material. This brief lecture provides information regarding different databases and how to best search for literature when using them.

Thursday 27 October: Paraphrasing

– Paraphrasing is when you rewrite text in a different form or in different words. This is often done to simplify the content or to make it clearer. The essential meaning of the text is kept, but not the exact wording.

Friday 28 October: Text Editing

– Before turning in your thesis, the text must often be edited. Editing covers everything from correcting spelling errors to moving, removing, or rewriting various sections to create a more coherent thesis.

Tuesday 1 November: Excel 

– Excel is a useful program when working with tables and calculations. In this brief lecture, basic functions to facilitate this work are explained.

Week 46: Theme Week – Academic Writing (in English)

Monday 14 November: Critical Thinking and Independent Work

– In this presentation we will give you some advice on how to reflect, read and write to take control of your thesis/dissertation.

Tuesday 15 November: How to Structure Your Thesis

– In this presentation we will talk about the IMRaD structure, the purpose of each part and what to write, and where, to fulfil the purpose of each part of the thesis.

Wednesday 16 November: The Common Thread and How to Write Coherently

– Your thesis needs a common thread and here we will give you some tools to accomplish coherence, cohesion, and well-organized paragraphs.

Thursday 17 November: Editing and Revision

– It is of importance that your texts are adapted to the recipient, the reader. Ensuring this will require editing and revisions. In this presentation, we will provide advice on editing and revision.

Friday 18 November: Time Management and Study Technique

– Time management and study technique are crucial during your studies. In this presentation, we will teach you more about time management and study technique.

Tuesday 22 November: Reference Management Software

– Using reference management software allows for easy adding of sources references in your texts when searching for information, but also organising a personal file library. If you have begun writing your thesis and are having trouble keeping track of your references, this lecture is for you.

– Tips and guidance on how to handle Word. If you saved the table of contents and page numbering for last, this presentation might be useful for you. (This presentation is in Swedish only.)

Tuesday 29 November: Speech Anxiety

– Feeling anxious or worried about speaking in front of others is a common experience. This brief lecture provides information on what speech anxiety is how to improve your ability for public speaking.
