Human Geography is a part of the discipline of geography that examines the interplay between people, society and the physical environment. In particular, human geographers are interested in spatial differentiation of human activities.

Human Geography is highly interdisciplinary and among its most important sub-fields it lists: economic geography; transportation geography; cultural geography; historical geography; behavioral geography; and political geography.

Tourism is now established as a focal area of geographic education. Geographers examine among others the impacts of tourism on various destinations, the travel flows between origins and destinations, the structure and organization of the tourism industry, and seek to understand the dynamics of change of places through tourism.
The one-year Masters degree in Human Geography specializing in tourism at Mid Sweden University is designed to provide a broad perspective of tourism’s spatial aspects. Instructors in the programme are both geographers and representatives of other fields in the Social Sciences. Students must take courses in tourism research, sustainable nature and culture-based tourism, and theory and science of tourism. Finally, they are expected to submit a thesis at the end of the academic year.
In addition to the one-year programme, Mid Sweden University also offers a two year Masters programme in Tourism specializing in Destination Development.
