The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge about international and comparative education which will enable the students to compare different education systems and examine these systems in relation to other countries and international standards.
After completion of the course the students should:
- have knowledge about the reasons to compare education systems in different countries,
- know how different education systems can be compared and how they are compared,
- know where to find information about the education systems of different countries and comparisons of these systems,
- be able to collect information from different sources to compare and examine different education systems
- Theory, methods and practice related to international and comparative education.
- International organisations working with education: UNESCO, EU, OECD, World Bank, IEA, etc.
- International processes comparing education and availability of international educational statistics, for example Education for All, the Lisbon process, PISA and “Education at a Glance”
- Comparison of different education systems
Selection rules and procedures
The selectionprocess is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
The course is taught as a regular course through a number of lectures and seminars. A part of the course is organised as individual or pair work comparing education in selected countries.
The course examinations are written and oral, continuous or final. The course work should be examined at the ordinary examination or re-examined at a later occasion during the same semester. Two opportunities to re-examine the course work are normally given in the following semester while the student has requested it. After that a student with a fail-grade is advised to participate in the next ordinary examination. Re-examinations based on the same curriculum are guaranteed within one year after the first registration on the course.

The grades A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F are given on the course. On this scale the grades A through E represent pass levels, whereas Fx and F represent fail levels.
