Aim

The aim of the course is to provide a deeper understanding of how emotions interact with decision-making at individual-, group- and civic level.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student is expected to:

Knowledge and understanding
- Describe basic research on how emotions affect decision-making.
- Describe relevant research in the field.
- Describe scientific methods for studying emotions and decision-making.

Skills and abilities
- Discuss different theoretical viewpoints on emotions and decision-making and apply them on current societal issues.
- Relate scientific methods about emotions and decision-making to actual theories in the field of psychology.
- Have the ability to design a scientific study in the field of emotions and decision-making.

Judgement and approach
- Compare and critically evaluate the validity of the body of knowledge within the field, and its contribution to the understanding of interrelational phenomena.
- Make reflections and evalue ethical aspects.
- Make reflections and evaluate different scientific approaches from chosen research question.

Content

The course presents theories about emotions and decision-making. How emotions affect humans at group- and individual level is discussed and problematized. Different methods to study how emotions affect decision-making in different situations is problematized and discussed. Teaching will primary consist of seminars and are expected to actively contribute to the discussions.

Entry requirements

A bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) with a major in psychology. Alternatively, a bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) with a different major and 60 credits in psychology. Alternatively, 180 credits (ECTS) in psychology without the requirement of having a completed degree.

Selection rules and procedures

The selectionprocess is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The course is a distance learning course with a limited number of compulsory meetings on campus in Östersund, Sweden. Participation via distance communication means is compulsory throughout the course. Students are required to be active in the course’s room in the online learning platform. The platform is the primary communication tool used for students and teachers, and students will find all information needed to complete the course in the course room.

Examination form

The course objectives will be examined through active participation in seminars and discussions, on site and online, as well as through written reports.

Grading system

The grades A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F are given on the course. On this scale the grades A through E represent pass levels, whereas Fx and F represent fail levels.
