Aim
This course aims to provide an introduction into classical research and into recent research developments in the field of emotional expression/perception and emotion regulation. Links with emotion theory and with applied research will be drawn.
Course objectives
After completing the course, students will:
Knowledge and understanding
• be able to identify and describe the links between emotion theory (different research traditions) and various approaches to the study of emotional expression, emotion perception and emotion regulation.
• be able to identify and describe concepts and aspects central to the field of emotional expression, emotion perception and emotion regulation.
• be able to describe how such concepts/aspects can be related with applications in selected fields (e.g. health, education or work psychology).
Skills and abilities
• be able to search and find additional information on new developments in the field of emotional expression, emotion perception, emotion regulation.
• be able to search and find applied research on emotional expression, perception, or regulation.
Judgement and approach
• be able to report, discuss (both orally and in writing) and examine recent developments and applications on/for research on emotional expression, perception, or regulation.
Content
In this course, emotional expression refers primarily to nonverbal displays of emotion. Studies on expression and on perception of emotions will be considered (i.e. an emotion communication approach is emphasized). Focus will be set on evolutionary/biological relevance of emotional expressions as well as on their social relevance. Emotion regulation will be considered primarily in relation to emotional expression, but also in relation to emotional feelings and physiology. Implications of emotion regulation for psychological and physical health will be considered. Students will address selected areas of applied research in individual or group assignments.
Entry requirements
A bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) with a major in psychology. Alternatively, a bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) with a different major and 60 credits in psychology. Alternatively, 180 credits (ECTS) in psychology without the requirement of having a completed degree.
English B/English 6 from Swedish gymnasium or the equivalent.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
The course is a distant learning course with a limited number of compulsory meeting on campus in Östersund, Sweden. Participation - via distance communication means - is compulsory throughout the course. Students are required to actively participate via the course room at the university's learning platform. The platform is the primary communication tool used for students and teachers, and students will find all information needed to complete the course in the course room.

Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
The course will be examined through active participation in seminars and discussions, on site and online, as well as through written reports.
