Aim

The aim of the course is to:
Develop an awareness of basic graphic design theory from a communicative perspective.
Gain a working knowledge of common digital design tools and production workflow techniques.
Experience the conceptual and practical process behind developing design work for publishing.

Course objectives

After passing the course students shall
- be able to recognise and apply the ground principles of typography and layout.
- be able to operate common digital design tools.
- be able to identify and apply basic image theory
- have basic knowledge of production workflow
- have experience of producing design work for publishing.

Content

Fundamental rules of layout and typography.
Principles of graphic design.
Composition rules and methodology.
Digital image development and manipulation.
Digital photography editing.

Selection rules and procedures

The selectionprocess is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Examination form

An individual graphic assignment (printed matter) will be used to evaluate the student. To pass this course, the student must satisfactorily complete the “individual printed matter” as well as two assignments. Grading is based on the individual printed matter. The individual printed matter will be graded as to typography, layout, idea level, actual implementation, and the final result.

Grading system

The grades A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F are given on the course. On this scale the grades A through E represent pass levels, whereas Fx and F represent fail levels.
