Aim

The course aims to provide a background of the methods used for the evaluation and analysis of sports performance and to develop understanding of how to independently integrate and implement these methods in sporting situations.

Course objectives

After completing the course students should be able to:
- Summarize and describe methods used to assess and evaluate individual sporting performance from physiological and biomechanical perspectives.
- Apply statistical methods for data analysis and evaluate the precision of different methods.
- Interpret and explain test results for different individuals and groups and relate these results to the requirements of the sport.
- Demonstrate knowledge regarding how psychological qualities are related to performance in different sports.
- Interpret and explain fundamentals ofsimulation and calculation models.

Content

Part 1 (6 credits):
- Physiological methods for indirect and direct testing
- Biomechanical tests methods
- Simulation and calculation models
- Sports related psychologiocal tests
- Methods for performance analysis in sports
- Simulation and calculation models

Part 2 (1,5 Credits):
- Laboratory and practical work

Entry requirements

Bachelor’s degree of minimum 180 credits (including a degree project of at least 15 credits or equivalent internationally recognised degree) in Sports Science, Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Medicine or Human Biology.

Selection rules and procedures

The selectionprocess is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The course is delivered in English. The teaching methods vary and include individual and group work. Examples of teaching methods include lectures, literature studies, seminars, workshops and practical exercises. Detailed information is given in the study guide.

Examination form

Part 1 (6 credits)
The course is examined through an individual written assignment (grade A, B, C, D, E, F, Fx).

Part 2 (1.5 credits)
The examination consists of active participation in seminars and laboratory sessions (grade Approved/Not approved).

If a student has a written decision from the coordinator at Mid Sweden University for students with disabilities, the examiner has the right to adjust the examination.

Retaking of passed exams to improve grades is not permitted by Mid Sweden University.

Grading system

The grades A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F are given on the course. On this scale the grades A through E represent pass levels, whereas Fx and F represent fail levels.
