Aim

The purpose of the course is to provide basic knowledge of physical activity and its importance for health. The course also aims to give knowledge about recommendations for physical activity and to illustrate and apply basic promotion strategies for physical activity.

Course objectives

After the course the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding
- describe theories underlying physical activity participation at intra-personal, inter-personal and environmental levels.
- describe the need of physical activity from an evolutionary perspective
- account for the positive and negative physiological and psychological effects of physical activity
- describe and explain recommendations of physical activity for attaining good health for different age-groups and specific population groups
- describe different methods to promote physical activity

Competence and skills
- critically review current scientific findings linked to physical activity and health
- show skills to perform a minor project to promote physical activity, identify and formulate a research question, approach the problem and evaluate and discuss the findings
- show written and oral skills to describe and discuss their own project

Moment 1
- definition of physical activity and health
- physiological and psychological effects of physical activity
-physical activity in the evolutionary perspective
- theories underlying physical activity participation
- recommendations of physical activity

Moment 2
- basic strategies for promotion of physical activity
- scientific writing and oral presentation

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars and practical exercises.
The course is taught in English.

Examination form

4000: Moment 1 - Individual written exam, 5.0 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG)

5000: Moment 2 - Individual written report and oral presentation, 2.5 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U) or Pass (G)

The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University’s disabilities adviser.

Retaking of passed exams to improve grades is not permitted by Mid Sweden University.

Examination restrictions

Students registered on this version of the syllabus have the right to be examined three (3) times per year according to this syllabus. For modules that require physical presence, examination is only offered once (1) per year.
