The purpose of this course is to gain an insight into various aspects of logistics rooted in logistics history with a focus on modern intermodal logistics, supply chains, The Toyota Way and different modelling methods within logistics and supply chains.

Course objectives

After completing the course students will be able to:
• Describe the history of logistics as well as have an understanding of its development,
• Describe different types of supply chains and startegies to handle these,
• Plan intermodal logistics solutions using network models and optimization,
• Apply mathematical models used in inventory management and forecasting,
• Apply production logistics concepts and processes based on the Toyota Way,
• Apply efficency calculations for decsion making in logistics
• Explaining the complexity of the supply chain as well as its challenges, risks and terminology.


The subjects in the course are mainly:

- The history of logistics
- Concepts in Supply Chain Management
-Production logistics with focus on the Toyota Way
- Reverse logistics
- Value stream mapping
- Inventory management and inventory modelling
- Network models and optimization of decision problems in logistics

Entry requirements

Industrial engineering and management BA (A), 30 credits. Matematics BA (AB) 24 credits.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars and project work.

The course includes lectures with theoretical issues raised based on real examples in transport and logistics.

Project: A study based on a theoretical or practical problem: Students form an opinion about the current challenges in logistics by searching the relevant literature , such as scientific papers and reports, after consultation with the course coordinator. As an alternative a practical problem at and organization can be solved. The group consists of three to four students

Laboratory work: Mathematical models: This is mostly done with the help of network models and optimization methods in the computer lab. Statistical models for inventory management and production logistics are included. This part performs in groups of maximum two persons.
