Aim

This course is structured in order to provide the students with a deep understanding of the working principles and design of different types of sensors, using a wide range of physical sensing principles. The acquired knowledge in this course should enable the students to select the most suitable type of sensor for a given measurement situation. The students should also understand the physical and technological limitations for a given type of sensor.

Course objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:
- Describe the working principles of different types of sensors.
- Evaluate the technological and physical limitations of a specific sensor.
- Propose a suitable sensor for a given measurement situation.
- Design an integrated sensor system with different types of sensors.

Content

The course focuses on sensors for physical, chemical and biological properties. The course covers:
- Sensor classification and characteristics.
- Physical principles of sensing.
- Working principles and applications of different types of sensors:
- Presence, displacement and level.
- Velocity and acceleration.
- Force and strain.
- Pressure and flow.
- Acoustic.
- Humidity and moisture.
- Light and radiation.
- Temperature.
- Chemical and biological.
- Sensor materials and technologies.

Entry requirements

Electrical Engineering BA (A), 30 credits.

Selection rules and procedures

The selectionprocess is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The lab sessions consist of practical tasks where the students will use different types of sensor, understand their principles of functioning and process the output data.

Examination form

1.5 hp, T101: Theory part 1: The theoretical part is examined using written exams.
Grading scale: A,B,C,D,E (pass levels), Fx and F (fail levels).

3.0 hp, T201: Theory part 2: The theoretical part is examined using written exams.
Grading scale: A,B,C,D,E (pass levels), Fx and F (fail levels).

1.5 hp, L101: Practical work: The practical work is examined with a written report and/or a presentation seminar.
Grading scale: Pass or Fail.

1.5 hp, I101: Hand-in assignment, written.
Grading scale: Pass or Fail

Grading system

The grades A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F are given on the course. On this scale the grades A through E represent pass levels, whereas Fx and F represent fail levels.
