Aim

The course aims to develop theoretical insights and academic skills within the discipline of the Humanities, specifically in the subject area of English Studies.

The general learning outcomes outlined in the Higher Education Ordinance apply to the degree program (see SFS 2006:1053)

Local learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student should:
- master academic concepts within the area of the Humanities, specifically those
within the subject area of English Studies, based on participation in seminars,
the authorship and presentation of a Master’s essay, as well as the opposition
of another essay.

The courses that compromise the Master’s program have specific learning
outcomes as specified in the respective course plans.

Content

The Master Program in English Studies has six components: an introduction module that focuses on the subject of Humanities, an elective module that focuses on advanced literary theory or literature and the environment, a module on advanced linguistics and a module that includes elective courses in either linguistics or literature. The last module consists of studies in the production of scholarly text and the writing of a scholarly essay.


Module 1. English MA, Perspectives on the Humanities, 7,5 ECTS-credits
The module introduces the study area of the Humanities and English Studies.

Module 2. English MA, Elective Module
Alt 1: English MA, Literary Theory I, 7.5 credits
Alt 2: English MA, Environmental Literature and Ecocriticism, 7.5 credits
Elective module that focuses either on literature in English and studies in theory and cultural contexts or literature and the environment

Module 3. English MA, Advanced level Linguistics, 7.5 credits
The module’s focus is on English linguistics; for example, syntax

Module 4: English MA, Elective Area of Study at Advanced Level, 7.5 credits
Alt1: English MA, Linguistic Methodology, 7.5 credits
Alt 2: English MA, Literary Theory II, 7.5 credits
Elective course within the subject area can be English linguistics or literature in English.

Module 5: English MA, Degree Project, 30 credits
The student will write and defend their scholarly and independently written essay (Master’s Degree Project). The module also includes the opposition of another Master’s essay in a seminar.

During the study period the names of courses and course elements, contents and localization may be subjected to certain changes.

Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires a completed Bachelor’s Degree with 90 HE Credits (First cycle A, B and C) in the subject area of English Studies.
