Aim

This education aims at providing the students with advanced knowledge within the subject Mental Health Education. The students will be provided with the skills necessary to react and act in accordance with the mental illness of the individual. During the programme, the student will be able to develop his or her ability to handle the complex issues that arise when individuals with mental illnesses are treated.

Programme objectives

Knowledge and understanding
To be awarded the qualification, the student must
- show knowledge and understanding of the main subject of the programme, Nursing. This includes knowledge of the theoretical scientific base of the field and knowledge of various methods that are used within this field.
- show knowledge and understanding of the human psychological development as well as the socialization process
- show knowledge and understanding of the complexity of causality for the mental illness the target group features
- show knowledge and understanding of diagnostics, assessment of self-care capacity as well as typical treatment and rehabilitation for the target group and
- show knowledge and understanding of the organisation of public healthcare and the socio-political and legal prerequisites for healthcare and nursing, as well as support and rehabilitation for the individual.


Skills and abilities
To be awarded the qualification, the student must
- show the ability to seek, gather and critically interpret relevant information to be able to phrase well defined issues within the main field of study
- show the ability to present and discuss their knowledge with different groups, and
- show the skills needed to be able to work independently with certain tasks within the fields the programme covers.
- show the ability to use interview techniques, conversation techniques, motivation talks,
methods of psychotherapeutic influence as well as transference and countertransference mechanisms
- Show familiarity with methods for structured symptom assessment, side effects of drugs, self-destruction and aggressiveness acted out.

Behaviour and ability to judge
To be awarded the qualification, the student must
- show knowledge of and have the preconditions to handle ethical problems within the main field of study.
- show knowledge of and have the preconditions to handle mentally ill individuals
in an ethical defensible way
- show knowledge of and have the preconditions to communicate with mentally ill individuals and
- show knowledge of the scientific base and have the preconditions to take part in the knowledge process of the field.

Individual project (degree project)
To be awarded the qualification, the student must have completed an individual project (degree project of at least 7,5 credits) within Psychiatric Nursing and within the limits of the course syllabus.

Description of programme

The main field of study, Nursing, is equivalent to 60 credits and includes an individual project (degree project of at least 7,5 credits). This way, the requests of a Higher Education Diploma in Nursing and also further studies of the first cycle (C) within the main field of study are met.

The theoretical education comprises courses in the fields of Nursing, Criminology and Social work. The clinical education sum up to 15 credits and are spread across fields where psychiatric work is carried out.

Scientific methods are integrated in all courses.

An individual project (degree project of at least 7,5 credits) is included. The purpose of the degree project is to deepen the knowledge of a chosen topic within the main field of study, Nursing.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
