Aim

The Master programme in Sociology at Mid Sweden University is one of general sociology, with specializations in organisation analysis, sociological theory and risk sociology. There is a possibility to work on the degree project within the framework of the research projects of the subject. Having completed this programme, you have the possibility to be admitted to third-cycle programmes and courses in sociology.

Programme objectives

Knowledge and understanding:
For the Master of Science in Sociology, students are expected to be able to:
- show knowledge and understanding within the area of sociology. This includes an overview of the area as well as in-depth knowledge in some parts of the area, and, in addition, insight in current research and development work
- show in-depth knowledge of research methods of sociology

Competence and skills:
For the Master of Science in Sociology, students are expected to be able to:
- show the ability to integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and handle complex phenomena, question formulations and situations even with limited information
- show the ability to independently identify and formulate sociological question formulations as well as to plan and conduct qualified tasks within a given period of time and with the appropriate method
- show the ability to account for and discuss their conclusions as well as the knowledge and the arguments these are based on in dialogue with different groups, both orally and in written
- show the necessary skills to take part in the sociology research and development work or to work with other qualified activities

Judgement and approach
For the Master of Science in Sociology, students are expected to be able to:
- show the ability to make correct judgements within the field of sociology, taking into consideration relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects of research and development work.
-show an insight in the scientific possibilities and limitations of sociology, its role in society and the responsibility people have for the use of it, and also
- show the ability to identify their need for further knowledge in sociology and to take responsibility for their own knowledge development.

Entry requirements

Bachelor of Science (at least 180 credits) with a major in Sociology, 90 credits.

Proven language proficiency in English (English course A/English 5), for example shown from one of the following international English tests:
- TOEFL with a minimum score of 530 on paper based test and not below 4.0 on the TWE
- TOEFL with a minimum score of 72 on internet based test and not below 17 on the TWE
- IELTS Academic Training with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and a minimum score on the specific parts of at least 5.0

Description of programme

The Master programme in Sociology aims at providing the students with both in-depth knowledge of sociology with a focus on organisation, working life, risk and crisis sociology, as well as the ability to use this knowledge in their independent, scientific work.
