Aim
The course is an introduction to computer science and is a preparatory course for practice oriented programmes. Central parts are the construction of the computer, computer components, basic terminology and software. The course focus is practical use of computers and software. It also introduces report writing and presentations.
Course objectives
The student shall be able to
- use correct terminology in the area of computer science,
- explain the structure and function of computer systems,
- describe how information is represented and stored in digital form,
- use and install programs in UNIX-like environments,
- write and interpret simple scripts,
- use LaTeX for writing reports,
- show skills in academic writing and presentation technique.
Content
- Data representation: bit, byte, number system, text representation.
- Computer architecture and components.
- Execution of programs (instruction execution cycle).
- Text-based interfaces
- Scripting using Python.
- Report writing and presentations using LaTeX.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
Web based distance course with no physical meetings:
All course material is presented on the web based course platform. Tutoring is provided via the course platform as needed by the student. This can be done by e-mail or discussion forum. Three hours of tutoring are allocated each student, this may come to change depending on available resources.

Grades Pass or Fail.

Grading system
Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
Other information
The student must have the following programs and equipment
- headset with earphones and microphone as well as a webcam, and
- the ability to install programs on a computer.
If you have not completed I115, Introductory assignment, before the end of the third week of the course, you will lose your place on the course as the university will register an early non-completion on the course.
This course cannot be included in the same degree as any of the courses with code DTAA02, DT095G, or DT013G.
