Aim

The goal of the course is to give basic knowledge about the distributed systems architecture, as well as methods for constructing these types of systems. The course deals with common distributed systems (distributed operating systems).

Course objectives

After the course the student will be able to:
- Give an overview of distributed systems and their potential advantage.
- Explain which properties that an excellent dynamic distributed system should have and construct a distributed system with such properties.
- Evaluate existing systems with consideration of communication and security.

Content

- An overview of distributed systems, as well as the potential advantages with solutions using distributed systems,
- Communication and synchronization with distributed systems,
- File server for distributed systems,
- Security issues in distributed systems.

Entry requirements

Computer Engineering BA (AB), 45 HE credits including Computer Engineering BA (A), Programming (Java is recommended), 15 HE credits, Computer Networks, 7,5 HE credits, Introduction to Operating Systems, 7,5 HE credits and Databases - Modelling and Implementing, 7,5 HE credits. Mathematics BA (A), 22,5 HE credits, including the course Discrete Mathematics, 7,5 HE credits.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching is performed through lectures and laboratory exercises.

Examination form

1.5 hp, L103: Laboratory exercises
Grade: Fail (F) or Pass (P)

6 hp, T103 Exam
Grade: A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. A-E are passing grades, Fx and F are failing grades.

Grading system

Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
