Aim

This course covers the procotols, architectures and applications that is used in todays network to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability.

Course objectives

After finishing this course you should be able to:
- account for the mostly used protocols for encryption, digital signatures and certificates,
- explain how to build a network that provides secure operation and protection for users,
- apply secure communication protocols over the Internet, and
- describe how lacking network security can affect society.

Fundamentals of encryption and integrity
- Symmetric- and asymetric encryption (e.g. DES, AES and RSA)
- Hash functions (e.g. HMAC)
- Block- and streamciphers
- Digital signatures
- Random and Pseudorandom numbergenerators
- Key distribution

IP Security
- Authentication header / Encryption Security Header
- Tunnel / transport modes
- Security associations
- Internet Key Exchange (IKE)

Applications for network security

Grade: Pass or Fail.

3.0 hp, L106: Laboratory exercises

Grade: Pass or Fail.

3.0 hp, T106: Exam
Grade: A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. A-E are passing grades, Fx and F are failing grades.

Grading system

Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Other information

Those who do not by the third course week conduct Assignment 0, I006, will lose their place as the university registers an "early break".
