Aim

This course gives you practical knowledge to administrate a UNIX-like system. The course will cover the knowledge needed to work with system administration and will go in-depth on the most common services found in a network.

Course objectives

After completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- administrate and modify a UNIX-like system and its services,
- identify, implement and motivate a choice of services,
- explain and implement domain name systems.
- explain how the start-up process works in a UNIX-like system,
- identify, analyse and solve problems that may arise.

Content

The course will cover the necessary knowledge to administer a UNIX-like system, such as fundamental commands used to navigate and work with the system, modify the operating systems kernel, configure and modify a boot loader and volume, process and user management.

Besides covering the knowledge needed to administer a UNIX-like system, the course also covers the most common services used on a network, such as CIFS, NFS, e-mail, DNSSEC, and firewalls.

Entry requirements

Computer Engineering BA (A), 30 Credits, including course in operating systems, 7.5 Credits.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The teaching will primarily be laborative with a few theoretically oriented lectures.

L105: Laboratory exercises, part one, 3 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U) or Pass (G)

L205: Laboratory exercises, part two, 3 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U) or Pass (G)

T105: Exam, 1.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University’s disabilities adviser1

If examination on campus cannot be conducted according to decision by the vice-chancellor, or whom he delegated the right to, the following applies: Exam T105, will be replaced with two parts, online examination and follow-up. Within three weeks of the online examination, a selection of students will be contacted and asked questions regarding the examination. The follow-up consists of questions concerning the execution of the on-line exam and the answers that the student have submitted.
