Aim
The student should develop the ability to use oral and written English as well as develop knowledge of English-speaking countries’ culture, literature and societies.
Course objectives
After completing the course the student should be able to:
- Understand and use oral and written English dependent on context and style.
- Display knowledge and understanding of English grammar as a language
system.
- Search for, find, choose and use information and language tools.
- Display a general ability to identify and compare cultural characteristics and
products in English-speaking countries.
- Display knowledge and understanding of individual literary texts in English
and be able to place them in their cultural and linguistic contexts as well as
use relevant terminology to read, understand, interpret and discuss texts.
- Contribute constructively to his/her studies, individually and in group as well
as in conjunction with teachers and other students, plan his/her study time for
short periods.
- With supervision produce a project that focuses on a topic associated with linguistics.
- Collaborate with other students in order to develop and improve his/her and
other students’ oral and written proficiency in English.

The course consists of four modules:
- Grammar, 7,5 Credits
- The Study of Cultures in English-Speaking Countries, 7,5 Credits
- Writing and Speaking in English, 7,5 Credits
- The Study of Literatures in English-Speaking Countries, 7,5 Credits

Admission to the course requires general admission requirements as well as SvB/Sv2B and English B

Selection rules and procedures
The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
Teaching forms include lectures, exercises and group exercises.
The course is designed so that student learning occurs within a process. This means that the majority of the modules include obligatory group work and written or oral discussions. All hand-in assignments (group and individual) and group discussions should be completed according to the specific module’s schedule.
Examination form
The course is examined through continuous assessment of oral and written assignments.
1. Grammar, 7,5 Credits
Examined partly through oral and written tasks which are continuously assessed and partly through written assignments and a final written examination.
2. The Study of Cultures in English-Speaking Countries, 7,5 Credits
Examined by means of oral and written assignments that are assessed throughout the module.
3. Writing and Speaking in English, 7,5 Credits
Examined by means of oral and written assignments that are continuously assessed throughout the module.
4. The Study of Literatures in English-Speaking Countries, 7,5 Credits
Examined through oral and written assignments that are continuously assessed throughout the module.
Students are entitled to scheduled examination opportunities during the course period as well two extra opportunities within one year. Extra examination opportunities are based on the same course literature. Students who have failed an examination or the course twice have the right to another examiner. A student who has passed an examination or course is not allowed re-examination in order to gain a higher grade.

Transitional rules
För lärarstuderande antagna till ULÄRY (före 1 juli 2007) finns möjlighet till konvertering av den sjugradiga betygsskalan till tregradig betygsskala.
Grading system
Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
Other information
For trainee teachers registered on ULÄRY (before 1 July 2007) it is possible to convert the seven grade scale to the three grade scale.
