Aim

The course is designed for those who have previously studied basic courses in electrical engineering and the generation and distribution of electrical energy. The course provides a basic understanding of the concept of smart grids and how it affects the electrical energy use. The course introduces students to discussions about smart grids impact on future electric energy systems.

Course objectives

After the course the student should be able to:
• Discuss the key concepts in the field of Smart Grids
• Examplify how power peaks can be handled using continuous feedback to consumers
• Describe the ways in which Smart Grids can improve energy production, distribution and consumption
• Describe the underlying technologies used in information technology in smart grids
• Know the basic concepts of models for adaptive pricing with the objectives of reducing peak loads and adjust the demand for electricity to instantaneous availability
• Describe how the infrastructure for electric generation, distribution and consumption are affected by an increasing level of renewable energy and electric cars

Content

Technologies for communication in Smart Grids: Aims to introduce Smart Grids: How problems with increased electrical energy peaks are processed; Models for dynamic pricing and its impact on energy consumption, with concepts such as Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI), Time of the USE (ToU), Demand Response (DR), Critical Point Pricing (CPP), (CPR), Energy Efficiency (EE). Changes in infrastructure for production and distribution of electrical energy in response to the entry of producers and consumers such as wind power and electric vehicles.

Entry requirements

Electrical Engineering BA (A), 30 Credits, including Circuit Theory, 7.5 Credits and Electronics, 7.5 Credits. Mathematics BA (A), 15 Credits.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The course starts with a mandatory diagnostic online test. The address is given in the welcome mail.

The course is given at distance form without physical meetings.
The course requires access to a computer and Internet access.
Teaching can take place in English or Swedish.

Grades: Pass or Fail

4.5 hp, I101: Assignments
Grades: Pass or Fail

3.0 hp, T101: Written Exam
Grades: A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. A-E are passed and Fx and F are failed.

Grading system

Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Other information

Anyone not completing the diagnostic test, Q101, within the first three weeks of the course will loose his registration for the course.
