Aim

The objective of the course is for the students to acquire a deeper understanding of the field of public health science through a chosen topic for an academic thesis and to develop their knowledge within scientific methods by planning and conducting an empirical scientific study.
Moreover, the student shall write and defend a thesis that corresponds to scientific standards, as well as critically review and evaluate another thesis.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

- search for and evaluate scientific projects of significance for the chosen topic
- formulate scientific problem/s, objective/s and questions
- format an appropriate research design based on selected objective/s and questions
- apply theories and methods that are relevant to the research question(s)
- carry out ethical considerations and be able to provide arguments to demonstrate that the ethical requirements are met
- refer to the work of others in a correct way
- analyze, interpret and understand the significance of the results
- present their results and interpretations transparently in accordance with the principles of scientific work
- critically review another student’s thesis and defend their own thesis based on scientific quality criteria

Content

To complete a scientific essay, known as thesis, on 15 higher education credits, as well as to carry out the roles as respondent and opponent.

Entry requirements

Completed degree of bachelor of at least 180 credits, including degree project of at least 15 credits or equivalent foreign degree, in the main subject area of public health science, health sciences or social sciences and the course Public Health Science MA, Selected review of literature I, 7,5 Credits.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Online distance education. The studies are conducted individually and in groups via an internet-based learning platform with the support of a study guide. The study form presupposes the students' active participation in online discussions and seminars.

Examination form

1000: Thesis course, 15 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Examination takes place through a scientific essay, known as thesis, as well as to carry out the roles as respondent and opponent.

The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University’s disabilities adviser.

Retaking of passed exams to improve grades is not permitted by Mid Sweden University.
